“You see,” said old Osborne to George, “what comes of  merit and industry and judicious speculations and that. Look  at me and my banker’s account.

“봐라,” 오즈번 영감이 손자 조지에게 말했다, “업적(능력)과 근면과 신중한 투기 등등으로 부터 무엇이 나올지 (생각해봐라). 나를 봐라 그리고 내 은행계좌를  봐라.

★speculations and that: 투기와 그 밖의 등등, Industry 제조업, 근면성 judicious 신중한, 판단력 있는,   speculation 추측,투기, merit 가치, 훌륭함

Look at your poor  grandfather Sedley and his failure. And yet he was a better  man than I was, this day twenty years — a better man I should  say by twenty thousand pounds.”

 불쌍한 외할아버지 세들리를 봐라, 그의 실패를. 그런데 20년 전에는 그가  나보다 부자였어. -아마도 2만 파운드쯤 더 많은 부자였어.”

★this day twenty years: 20년 전 오늘(this day twenty years ago)의 옛날식 표현.     

I fancy I, too, have my professional way of looking at things,  and am disposed to judge men, not by what they do but by the  skill  they have in the use of words.

짐작컨대, 나 역시도, 내 직업에 따른 사물을 바라보는 방식(관점)이 있는 것  같다. 그래서 그들이 무엇을 하는가에 의해서 판단하는 것이 아니라 말의 사용에  있어서 그들이 가지고 있는 말솜씨(skill)에 의해서 사람을 판단하려는 경향이 있다. 

★fancy: (어쩐지) ~라고 생각하다, ~같은 생각이 들다, disposed ~마음이 있는,생각하는

And I know  that when an  artist comes  into my house  he “sizes me up” from the pictures on  the wall, just as when the upholsterer comes he “places” me  according to the style of the chairs and the quality of the carpet,  or as when the gourmet comes  he judges  by the cooking and the  wine.

그리고 화가가 내 집에 들어오면, 그는 벽에 걸려있는 그림을 보고 나를 평가한다, 마치 실내 장식업자가 (우리 집에) 오면 의자의 스타일이나 카펫의 품질에 따라서 나를 평가하는 것처럼. 또는 미식가가 (우리 집에) 오면 요리와 포도주를 가지고 판단한다.

★size up: 평가하다, 판단하다. sizes me up 널 평가하고 있는거야   ★upholsterer: (직업으로 소파 등에) 덮개를 씌우는[새로 가는] 일을 하는 사람, 실내 장식업자, 의자 천갈이 업자 ★place: (아무의 신분, 성격 따위를) 판정하다, 평가하다 

If you give him Champagne  he reverences you; if hock he  puts you among the commonplace.

 만약 그에게 샴페인을 내놓으면 나를 존경하지만, 백포도주를 내놓으면 보통사람 중의 하나로 평가할 뿐이다.

 ★hock: 독일산 백포도주(Rhine wine),  commonplace 아주 흔한, 흔히 있는 일    reverence 숭배
