"On the Philosophy of Hats" 모자 철학 - 6

 

하루에 포스팅하는 분량을 조금씩 하기로 했습니다. 공부차원으로 올리는 것인데 저도 따라가기 힘들게 느껴지기에 하루의 공부량을 좀 줄여서 올립니다. 이 On the Philosophy of hats (모자철학)은 재미있는 주제입니다. 그리고 단어도 어려운 것이 그렇게 많지는 않습니다. 재미있게 봐주세요

It is so with the dentist. He judges all the world by its teeth.

치과의사도 마찬가지다. 그는 세상 사람들을 그의 이로 평가한다. 

One look in your mouth and he has settled and immovable convictions about your character, your habits, your physical  condition, your position, and your mental attributes.

입 속을 들여다보고 그(치과의사)는 결정된 그리고 움직일 수 없는 확신을 갖게 된다. 우리의  성격, 습관, 육체적인 상태, 지위, 그리고 정신적 특성에 대해서. 

★mental attributes: 정신적 특성 ,  immovable 고정된,요지부동인  conviction 신념,확신   attribute 결과로 보다, 자질,~것이라고 보다 

He  touches a nerve and you wince. “Ah,” says he to himself, “this  man takes too much alcohol and tobacco and tea and coffee.”

그는 신경을 건  드리고(예민한 문제를 건드리고) 우리는 움찔하고 놀란다. “아,” 그는 혼자 말한다. “이 사람은 술을 많이 마시는군, 담배를 많이 피는 군, 차나, 커피를 너무 많이 마시는군.”

, ★touches a nerve: 신경을 건드리다. 이 구문은 관용적으로 ‘mention or  bring to mind a sensitive issue or subject’(민감한 문제를 건드리다)라는 의미를 지님.  nerve 신경,긴장  wince 움찔하고 놀라다

He sees the teeth are irregular. “Poor fellow,” he says, “how  badly he was brought up!” He observes  that the teeth are  neglected.

그는 이가 고르지 못한 것을 본다. “불쌍한 친구,” 그는 말한다, “제대로 양육을  못 받았군!” 그는 이가 방치되고 있다는 것을 알게 된다.

★brought up: bring up의 과거, 양육하다. (be bring up:수동), irregular  고르지 못한  ,  observe ~을 보다. 관찰하다, 말하다

“A  careless fellow,” he says. “Spends his money on  follies and neglects his family I’ll be bound.”

“부주의한 친구,” 그는  말한다. “돈을 어리석은 곳에 쓰고 있고 틀림없이 가족을 방치하고 있겠군.” 

★I’ll be bound: =I’m sure 확신한다, 장담하건대, 틀림없다  , neglect 방치하다, 방치 ,소홀 , folly 판단력부족, 어리석은 어리석은 행동 , areless 부주의한, 조심성 없는,경솔한

And by the time  he has finished with you he feels that he could write your  biography simply from the evidence of your teeth. And I  daresay it would be as true as most biographies — and as false.

 그리고 그가 우리를 끝낼 때쯤(이를 검사하고 결론을 내릴 때)에는 우리 이의 증거만 가지고 그는 우리에 대한 전기를 쓸 수 있을 거라고 느끼게 된다. 아마도  그것은 대부분의 전기처럼 진짜가 될 것이다. – 혹은 가짜가 될 것이다.

★I daresay: =probably ,  biography 전기 daresay 아마도 ~일 것이다. as true as 그만큼 사실
