“Afternoon of an American Boy”- 1

“Afternoon of an American Boy” 는  E.B . White(1899~1985) 의 작품입니다. 나름대로 읽어볼만한 글입니다. 미국이란 나라를 이해하기 위해 꼭 필요한 작품이라고 생각합니다. 같이 함께 읽어 보도록 합시다.

When I was in my teens, I lived in Mount Vernon, in the same block with J. Parnell Thomas, who grew up to become chairman of the House Committee on Un -American  Activities.

내가 10대 시절에, 나는 마운트 버논에 살았는데, J. 파넬 토마스와 같은 블록에서 살았다. 그는 성장해서 하원 반미활동 조사 위원회 위원장이 되었다.

★Mount Vernon: New YorK시 북부 Bronx 지구에 인접한 도시. ★the House Committee on Un-American Activities: 하원 반미활동조사위원회.  냉전 이후 미국 행정부와 문화계(특히 Hollywood 영화계)에 공산주의자들이 활동한다는 판단 하에 이를 조사하기 위해 하원에 설치된 위원회(HCUA).

I lived on the corner of Summit and East Sidney,  at No. 101 Summit Avenue, and Parnell lived four or five  doors north of us on the same side of the avenue, in the  house the Diefendorfs used to live in.

 나는  ‘Summit가’와 ‘East Sidney’가 교차하는  모퉁이, 서밋 애비뉴 101호에 살았고, 파넬은 그 도로의 같은 쪽, 우리 집 북쪽으로 너 댓집 위에 살았는데, 디펜도르프 집안이 살았던 그 집에서 살았다.

Parnell was not a playmate of mine, as he walked by our  house on his way to and from the depot.

파넬은 내 놀이친구는 아니었고, 그가 기차 정거장을 오고 가는 길에 우리 집을  지나다녔다.

He was a good-looking young man, rather quiet and shy. Seeing him, I  would call “Hello, Parnell!” and he would smile and say  “Hello, Elwyn!” and walk on.

 그는 잘생기고, 다소 말이 없으며 수줍음을 타는 젊은이였다. 그를  보고, 내가 “헬로, 파넬!”이라고 부르면, 그는 웃으며 “헬로, 엘윈!”이라고 말하며  계속 걸어가곤 했다. (would 과거의 습관)

Once I remember dashing out  of our yard on roller skates and executing a rink turn in  front of Parnell, to show off, and he said, “Well! Quite an  artist, aren’t you?” I remember the words.

한번은 내가 우리 마당에서 롤러스케이트를 타고 뛰쳐나가, 과시해 보이려고, 파넬 앞에서 링크 턴을 수행해 보였는데, 그러자 그가 “음! 대단한 예술가시군,”이라고 말했던 그 단어가 기억난다. 

★show off: 자랑하다, 과시하다 ★Quite an artist, aren’t you: 대단한 예술가시군? dashing out은 '쏜살같이 달려나가다 * Quite 상당히,꽤  * execute 실행하다, 처형하다

I was delighted at  praise from an older man and sped away along the flagstone  sidewalk, dodging the cracks I knew so well.

 나는 나보다 나이 많은 남자가 칭찬해줘서 기뻤다. 그래서 판석이 깔린 인도를 따 라서 속도를 내어 달려갔다, 내가 잘 알고 있는 틈새를 피해가면서 달아났다.

       speed –sped-sped     speed away  속도를 내며 사라지다 dodge 움직이다(피하다)재빨리 움직이다.
