In the same way, the business man looks at life through the  keyhole of his counting-house. The world to him is an  “emporium,” and he judges his neighbour by the size of his  plate glass. And so with the financier.

마찬가지로, 사업가는 자기 사무실의 열쇠구멍으로 세상(삶)을 내다본다.  그에게 세상은 중앙시장이고, 그는 판유리의 크기로 그의 이웃을 판단한다. 그리고  금융업자도 마찬가지다.

When one of the Rothschilds heard that a friend of his who had died had left only a million of money he remarked: “Dear  me, dear me! I thought he was quite well off.”

로스차일드 가문의 한사람이 그의 친구가 단지 백만 파운드를 남기고 죽었다는  것을 들었을 때 이렇게 말했다. “저런, 저런! 나는 그가 꽤 잘 산다고 생각했는데.”

His life had  been a failure, because he had only put a million by for a rainy  day. Thackeray expresses the idea perfectly in
Vanity Fair: —

그의 인생은 실패였던 셈이다,(로스차일드 가문의 사람이 보기에는)  왜냐하면 그는 만일의 경우를 대비해서 겨우 백만 파운드밖에 못 남겼으니까. 새커리는  그 생각을 “허영의 시장”에서 완벽하게 묘사하고 있다.
