9. The Great Depression in Three Keys

It was only until the advent of World War II, when the necessities of war mandated the need for jobs, that the economic malaise was lifted. → 전쟁필수품으로 일자리필요성이 요구된 2차 세계대전이 도래하고 나서야 비로소 경제 불안이 제거되었다.

The decade [just prior to the Great Depression] is often called the “Roaring Twenties.” This refers to a time of unprecedented prosperity and cultural flourishing. One could hardly imagine danger in the near future. Everything seemed to indicate a prosperous and abundant future. → 대공황 바로 직전 10년을 종종 “흥청거리는 20년대”라고 부른다. 이것은 전례가 없는 번영과 문화적 융성의 시기이다. 누구도 가까운 미래에 위험을 예상치 못한다. 모든 것이 번영과 풍요의 미래를 가리키는 듯했다.

When Roosevelt stepped up to the podium to be sworn in [as the 32nd President of the United States]}, he spoke in a strong, confident voice: “… Let me assert that the only thing we have to fear is ... fear itself.” With these stunning words of confidence and hope, a great cloud was lifted and the national mood shifted noticeably. → 루즈벨트가 미국의 제32대 대통령으로서 맹세하기 위하여 연단에 올랐을 때, 그는 강력하고 확신에 찬 목소리로 연설했다. “우리가 두려워해야 할 유일한 것은 ··· 바로 두려움 그 자체라고 저는 확신합니다.” 이런 확신과 희망에 찬 굉장한 단어들로, 거대한 구름은 걷히고, 국민적 분위기는 괄목할만하게 변화되었다.

But what created a sense of intimacy with the American people, in a word, was radio. Taking advantage of this technology and the fact {that the radio had infiltrated millions of households}, FDR conducted a series of “fireside chats.” → 그러나 미국인들과 친밀감을 창조한 것은 한마디로 라디오였다. 이 기술과 라디오가 수백만 가구에 스며들었다는 사실을 활용하여, FDR은 일련의 “노변(화롯가) 담화”을 실시했다.

※ Roaring Twenties

광란의 20년대라는 용어는 1920년부터 1929년 대공항이 시작되기까지의 기간을 가리킨다. 대도시를 기반으로 물질적인 풍요속에서 사회와 문화가 발전하고 활력이 넘치던 시기이다. 재즈음악과 플래퍼 패션 등이 특징이다.

미국의 중심부에 크게 자리한 내륙 저지대에 흙먼지 폭풍이 몰아 닥친 1930년대(어떤 지역은 1940년대까지)의 대규모 재해를 가리킨다.

노변담화. 미국 대통령인 루즈벨트가 행한 대중 스피치를 가리킨다. 1933~1944년 동안 라디오 방송을 통해서 30회 정도의 연설을 했다.
