6. Early Religion in America

한국방송통신대학교의 교재 미국사회와 문화의 내용이다. 초기 미국인의 종교에 대해서 자세한 설명이 이루어진 내용이다. 미국인들의 종교의 자유도 결국은 경제적인 것이 영향을 많이 미쳤다고 하니.. 사람 사는 세상은 똑같은 것 같다.

·America as Religious Refuge
One common prevailing notion is that modern America was founded as a refuge
for religious freedom. Of course, on one level, this is undeniable. Starting in
1620 and then in greater numbers by 1630, some 20,000 Puritans emigrated to
America, mostly to flee from harsh persecution under King Charles I and
Archbishop William Laud in England.

→흔하게 퍼져있는 하나의 생각은 현대 미국이 종교의 자유를 위한 피난처로서 세워졌다는
것이다. 물론 부인할 수 없다. 1620년에 시작하여 1630년대에는 더 많은 약2만명의 청교도가
미국으로 이주했는데, 대개는 영국의 찰스1세와 윌리엄 로드 대주교의 가혹한 박해로부터
벗어나기 위해서였다.

In fact, many European immigrants were drawn to America not for religious
motives, but for economic profit. Moreover, freedom to worship in America was
limited in reality. The colonies were highly intolerant and any dissent was severely
punished. The Puritans also conceived society to be a theocracy — a system of
governing the people by divine rule.
→ 사실, 많은 유럽 이주민들은 종교적 동기 때문이 아니라 경제적 이익 때문에 미국에
이끌렸다. 더욱이 실제로 미국에서 예배의 자유가 제한되었다. 종교적 관용이 부족했고, 어떠한
이견도 심각하게 처벌 받았다. 또한 청교도들은 사회가 신정일치체제 – 사람들을 신의 지배에
따라 다스리는 체제 – 라고 생각했다.

Likewise, William Penn, a Quaker, embarked upon {what he called the “Holy
Experiment”} by providing a haven for persecuted Quakers in 1681. By 1685,
thousands of Quakers lived in Pennsylvania under the principle of total religious
freedom. Penn would go on to establish Philadelphia, the “city of brotherly
love.”
→ 마찬가지로 퀘이커였던 윌리엄 펜은 1681년에 박해 받은 퀘이커 들에게 피난처를 제공함
으로써 “성스러운 실험”을 착수하였다. 1685년까지 수천의 퀘이커 가 완전한 종교적 자유의
원칙에 따라 펜실베이니아에 살았다. 펜은 더 나아가 필라델피아, 즉 형제애의 도시를 세우게
될 것 이었다.

The Great Awakening → 대 각성
Beginning in the 1730s, a strange phenomenon took place {that electrified the
nation}. → 1730년대에 시작하여 국가를 놀라게 한 이상한 현상이 시작되었다.

Congregation members and listeners responded [by weeping, shouting, and
fainting]. Rejuvenated, they proceeded to renew their commitment to God
[through the vigorous pursuit of personal acts of devotion].
→ 신도들과 청중들은 울음, 고함, 실신 등으로 반응하였다. 원기를 회복한 그들은 개인적인
헌신적 행위를 열성적으로 추구함으로써 신에 대한 자신들의 헌신을 갱생하는 방향으로
나아갔다.

’프렌드 종교단체 (Religious Society of Friends, 퀘이커 교도의 공식단체명)‘ 가 자신들, 그리고
박해 받는 다른 종교적 소수집단을 위해 지금의 펜실베이니아에 공동체를 건설 하려 했던 시도를 가리킨다.
