10. American Dream

The American Dream is belief in the freedom that allows all citizens and  residents of the United States to achieve their goals in life through hard work. Today, it often refers to one’s material prosperity, which is dependent upon one’s abilities and work ethic, and not on a rigid class structure.

→ 미국의 꿈이란 모든 시민과 거주자들에게 열심히 일하면 그들의 인생의 목표를 달성할 수있는 자유가 있다는 꿈이다. 오늘날 물질적인 번영을 가리키기도 하는데, 이는 개인의 능력과 노동윤리에 달려있지 엄격한 계급 구조에 달려있지 않다

Although the phrase’s meaning has evolved over the course of American history, for some people, it is the opportunity to achieve greater material prosperity than was possible in their countries of origin. For others it is the opportunity for their
children to grow up and receive an education and its consequent career opportunities. It is the opportunity to make individual choices without the restrictions of class, caste, religion, race, or ethnic group.
→ 미국의 꿈의 의미는 역사를 거쳐 전개되었지만, 어떤 사람들에게는 모국보다 더 큰 물질적 번영을 성취하는 기회였고, 다른 사람들에게는 그들의 자녀들을 기르고 교육시키고 그에 따른 직업을 가질 수 있는 기회이기도 했다. 그것은 계급이나 종교, 인종이나 민족 집단에 관계없이 개인적인 선택을 할 수 있는 기회였다.

The concept of the self-made man is deeply rooted in the American Dream. It is as old as the United States. Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States], is also sometimes said to have co-founded that very concept. In his Autobiography, he describes his way from a poor, unknown son of a candle maker to a very successful business man and highly acknowledged member of the American society
→ 자수성가한 사람의 개념은 미국의 꿈에 깊게 뿌리내리고 있다. 건국선조중의 한명인 벤자민 프랭클린은 이 개념을 공동으로 만든 사람이라고 얘기되곤 한다. 그의 자서전에서, 그는 그가 살아온 길을 가난한 양초제조업자의 아들에서 성공한 사업가이지 아주 높이 인정되는 미국사회의 일원이 된 사람으로 서술하고 있다.

Franklin creates the archetype of someone coming from low origins, who, againstall odds, breaks out of his inherited social position, climbs up the social ladder and creates a new identity for himself. Key factors in this rise from rags to riches are hard work and a solid moral foundation.
→프랭클린은 모든 역경을 딛고 자신의 낮은 신분에서 벗어나 신분 상승을 이루어, 새로운 정체성을 창조한 사람의 전형을 만들었다. 성공의 주요 요소들은 근면과 견고한 도덕적 기반이었다.

California Dream
“The old American Dream ... was the dream of the Puritans, of Benjamin Franklin’s “Poor Richard” ... of men and women content to accumulate their modest fortunes a little at a time, year by year by year. The new dream was the dream of instant wealth, won in a twinkling by audacity and good luck. This golden dream  became a prominent part of the American psyche only after Sutter’s Mill.”
→ 옛날 미국의 꿈은 청교도 인들이나 벤자민 프랭클린의 가난한 미국인의 꿈으로 조금씩 수수한 부를 축적하는데 만족해했다. 새로운 미국의 꿈은 눈 깜짝할 사이 즉각적으로 횡재하는 꿈이었다. 이 골든 드림은 수터의 제재소 사건 이후 미국인의 심리에 지배적 부분이 되었다.

Jim Crow laws: Named after a racist caricature of a black man performed in “blackface” by white minstrel actors, this term represents a series of laws that  enforced the legal segregation of blacks and whites throughout the American South.
→ 짐 크로우 법은 한 백인 악극단의 배우가 흑인분장을 하고 연기한 흑인을 그린 인종 차별적
인 캐리커처의 이름을 따서 지은 것이다. 이는 남부전역에 걸쳐 행해진 흑인과 백인을 강제
적으로 분리한 법이었다.

Martin Luther King
Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. 
→100년전에 위대한 미국인(링컨)이 노예 해방선언서에 사인을 한, 그의 상징적인 그림자 아래에
오늘 우리가 서있다.

In a sense we have come to our nation’s capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence}, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.

→ 우리(African Americans)는 수표를 현금으로 바꾸려고 수도에 왔다. 우리 공화국의 건축가가 헌법과 독립선언서에 장엄한 말들을 써 놓았을 때, 모든 미국인이 상속인이 되는 약속어음에 사인을 하셨습니다.

black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
→ 백인 뿐만 아리나 흑인도 삶과 자유와 행복의 추구권의 양도할 수 없는 권리를 보장 받게 하였습니다.

It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked “insufficient funds.”
→ 이 나라의 유색인종들에 관한 한, 미국이 이 약속 어음을 부도처리 했다는 것은 오늘날 분명하다. 이 성스러운 의무를 존중하기는커녕, 흑인들에게는 부도수표를 발행했고, 그 수표는 자금 부족이라는 표시로 돌아왔다.

※ Gilded Age
남북전쟁이 끝나고 남북통합의 재건이 이뤄지던 19세기 후반 동안 급속한 경제발전과 인구팽창이 있었던 시기를 가리킨다. 이 말은 Mark Twain과 Charles Dudley Warner가 쓴 책이름에서 유래하였다.

※ Jazz Age
이 용어를 만들어낸 F. Scott Fitzgerald는 The Great Gatsby(1925)에서 이 새로운 시기의 ’흥청망청‘하는 비윤리성을 비판하였다.

※”self-made man”
이 표현은 가난하게 태어났거나 기타 불이익을 지닌 채 태어났음에도 불구하고 커다란 물질적성공을 거둔 사람을 가리킨다.
