“Afternoon of an American Boy”-3

In the matter of girls, I was different from most boys of my  age. I admired girls a lot, but they terrified me.

여자 문제에 있어서, 나는 내 나이의 다른 아이들과는 달랐다. 나는 여자아이들을 무척 좋아했지만, 그들이 나를 무섭게 했다.

I did not feel that I possessed the peculiar gifts or accomplishments that  girls liked in their male companions — the ability to dance,  to play football, to cut up a bit in public, to smoke, and to make small talk.

나는 여자들이 그들의 남자친구에게 바라는 특별한  재능이나 능력을 가지고 있다고 느끼지 않았다. - 이를테면, 춤을 추거나, 축구를 하거나, 사람들 앞에서 익살을 떨거나, 담배를 피우거나  잡담을 잘하는 재능.

I couldn’t do any of these things  successfully, and seldom tried.

나는 이런 어떤 것도 잘할 줄 몰랐고, 거의 해보려고 하지도 않았다.

*successfully 성공적으로, 잘,훌륭하게 seldom 좀처럼 ~않는

Instead, I stuck with the accomplishments I was sure of: I  rode my bicycle sitting backward on the handle bars, I made up poems, I played selections from Aïda on the piano.

대신에, 나는 내가 확신하는 능력에 충실했다. 예를 들면, 나는 자전거 손잡이 위에 거꾸로 앉아서 자전거를 탔고, 시를 지었고, 아이다의 발췌곡들을 피아노로  연주했다.

In  winter, I tended goal in the hockey games on the frozen  pond in the dell. None of these tricks counted muchwith  girls.

겨울에, 나는 골짜기에 얼어붙은 연못 위에서 하는 아이스하키 게임에서 골키퍼로 뛰었다. 이 모든 비결들이 소녀들에게는 대단히 중요하지 않았다.
