“Afternoon of an American Boy”-2

[The thing that made Parnell a special man in my eyes in those days] was not his handsome appearance and friendly manner but his sister. Her name was Eileen.

그 시절에 내가 보기에 파넬이 특별한 남자가 되게 만든 것은 그의 잘생긴 외모나 다정한 태도가 아니라 그의 누이였다. 그녀의 이름은 아일린이었다.

She was my age and she was a quiet, nice-looking girl.

그녀는 나와 동갑이고 말수가 적었으며, 예쁜 소녀였다.

She never came over  to my yard to play, and I never went over there, and,  considering that we lived so near each other, we were  remarkably uncommunicative; nevertheless, she was the girl  I singled out, at one point, to be of special interest to me.

 그녀는 결코 우리 집 마당에 놀러 오지 않았으며, 나도 결코 그쪽으로 건너가지 않았다. 그런데, 우리가 서로 그렇게 가까이 살고 있다는 점을 고려한다면, 우리는 놀랄 만큼 소통을 하지 않았던 것이다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 그녀는 어느 한 시점에, 내가 고른, 나에게 특별한 관심의 대상이 된 소녀였다.

Being of special interest to me involved practically nothing on a girl’s part — it simply meant that she was under constant surveillance.

나에게 특별한 관심의 대상이 된 것은 소녀의 입장에서는 사실상 아무 상관이 없었다. - 그것은 그저 그녀가 끝없는 감시 하에 있다는 것을 의미했다.

On my own part, it meant that I  suffered an astonishing disintegration when I walked by her  house, from embarrassment, fright, and the knowledge that  I was in enchanted territory.

나로서는, 그것이 내가 그녀 집을 지나갈 때면, 당혹감, 두려움, 그리고 내가 마법의 영토에  들어와 있다는 그 지식으로부터 놀랄만한 해체를 경험했다는 것을 의미했다.
