"On the Philosophy of Hats" 모자 철학 - 4

 

Bismarck’s size was 7-1/4, so was Gladstone’s, so was  Campbell-Bannerman’s. But on the other hand, Byron had a  small head, and a very small brain.

비스마르크의 크기는 7과 1/4이었고, 글래드스턴도 그랬고, 캠벨배너먼도 마찬가지였다. 하지만 한편으로 바이런은 작은 머리와 매우 작은 뇌를 가지고 있었다.

And didn’t Goethe say that  Byron was the finest brain that Europe had produced since  Shakespeare?

그리고 셰익스피어 이래로 유럽이 만들어낸 최고의 두뇌는 바이런이었다고 괴테가 말하지 않았던가? 

I should not agree in ordinary circumstances,  but as a person with a smallish head, I am prepared in this  connection to take Goethe’s word on the subject.

나는 보통의 경우에는 동의하지 않지만, 작은 머리를 가지고 있는 사람으로서, 이 일과 관련해서 그 문제에 대해서는 괴테의 말을 받아드릴 준비가 되어있다.

As Holmes points out, it is not the size of the brain but its  convolutions that are important (I think, by the way, that  Holmes had a small head). Now I should have liked to tell the  hatter that though my head was small I had strong reason to  believe that the convolutions of my brain were quite top-hole.

홈스가 얘기한대로, 중요한 것은 두뇌의 크기가 아니라 주름이다.(it ~ that 강조  구문) (내 생각에, 덧붙여 말하자면, 홈스도 작은 머리를 가졌던 것 같다.) 나는  모자상인에게 내 머리가 작기는 하지만 내 뇌의 주름은 아주 훌륭하다는 것을 믿을 충분한 이유가 있다고 말하고 싶었다.(말하고 싶었지만 못했다-가정법).

★Holmes: Sherlock Holmes를 가리킨다.★convolutions  [|kɑːnvə|luːʃn ]: (나선형의) 주름, 뇌회(대뇌 표면의 주름)

★top-hole: <영국, 비격식> 아주 뛰어난, 훌륭한,   not A but B : A가 아니고 B,    points out 지적하다, 가리키다
