"On the Philosophy of Hats" 모자 철학 - 3

 

“It seems to me,” he went on, “that the size of the ’ead  is  according to the occupation.

“제가 보기에는,” 그가 계속 말했다. “머리 크기는 직업을 따라가는 것 같아요.

Now I used to be  in a seaport  town, and I used to serve a lot of ships’ captains. ’Stror’nary  the ’eads they have.

제가 항구에 갔었는데, 거기에서 많은 배의 선장들을 상대를 했죠. 참 특별한 머리를 그들(선장)은 가지고 있었죠.

 I suppose it’s the anxiety and worry they  get, thinking about the tides and the winds and the icebergs  and things....”

  제 생각에는 그게 그들이 해야 되는 고민, 걱정 때문일 겁니다. 조수간만, 바람, 빙산 그리고 모든 것들에 대해 생각해야 하니까요.

I went out of the shop with my ord’nary ’ead, conscious of  the fact that I had made a poor Impression on the hatter.

나는 나의 보통 머리를 가지고 가게를 나왔다. 내가 그 모자가게 주인에게는  형편없는 인상을 주었다는 사실을 의식하면서 (~가게를 나왔다.) 

To  him I was only a 6-7/8 size, and consequently a person of no consequence.

그에게 나는 겨우 6과 7/8 사이즈였다. 결과적으로 중요한 인물이 아니었다.

I should have liked to point out to him that it is  not always the big heads that have  the jewel in them. Of  course, it is true that great men often have big heads.

나는 그에게 머리가 큰 사람이  늘 머릿속에(in them) 대단한 것(jewel)을 가지고 있는 것은 아니라고 말하고 싶었다. 물론, 위인들이 종종 머리가 큰 것은 사실이다.

‘종종’의 국어사전 의미? 시간적이나 공간적으로 간격이 조금씩 뜨게 (=가끔, 종종히, 더러1, 왕왕2)
