"On the Philosophy of Hats" 모자 철학 - 2

모자철학에 관한 두번째입니다. 어릴때 남학생들 사이엔 이런말을 헀지요 '특공대 : 특별히  공부도 못하는게 머리만 크다' 라는 뜻으로 사용하곤 했지요. 그 당시엔 다르게 적용되어진 모양이지요.

But there’s some ’eads — well, look at that ’at there.

하지만 이런 머리들이 있어요. - 저기 있는 모자 좀 보세요. ★’at: ← hat,

It belongs  to a gentleman  with a wonderful funny-shaped ’ead, long and  narrer and full of nobbles—’stror’nary ’ead ’e ’as.

아주 재미있게 생긴  머리를 가진 어떤 신사분 것인데, 길고, 좁고, 혹이 있는, - 아주 특별한 머리를 그는 가지고 있죠.

 ★narrer: ← narrow좁은. London 일부 지역의 사투리로 추정, ★nobbles: 현대영어사전에 나오지 않는 단어로, 속어로 ‘둥근 덩어리, 혹’을 뜻하는 nob의 변형으로 추정 ,★’stror’nary ’ead ’e ’as: extraordinary head he has

And as for sizes, it’s wonderful what a difference there is.

그리고 크기에 관해 말하자면, 얼마나 엄청난 차이가 있는지 놀라울 따름입니다.

I do a lot of  trade with lawyers, and it’s astonishing the size of their ’eads.  You’d be surprised.

  저는 변호사들과 거래를 많이 하는데, 그 사람들 머리 크기는 정말로 놀랍습니다. 선생님도 놀라실 거예요.

★You’d be surprised: You would be surprised, astonishing 정말 놀라운, 믿기 힘든 astonish 깜짝 놀라게 하다

I suppose it’s the amount of thinking they have to do  that  makes their ’eads swell.

그들의 머리를 부풀게(크게) 만드는 것은 그들이 해야만 하는 생각의 양이라고  저는 생각해요.

★it ~ that~ : it ~ that 강조 구문  ★suppose: 생각하다, 추측하다 , ★swell(부풀다, 부풀어 오르다) :

Now that ’at there belongs to Mr.— (mentioning the name of a famous lawyer), wonderful big ’ead  ’e ’as — 7-1/2 — that’s what ’e takes, and there’s lots of ’em  takes over 7.

 저기 있는 저 모자는 Mr. 누구의 모자인데 (유명한 변호사의 이름을 언급하면서), 7과1/2 크기의 놀랄만한 큰 머리를 가지고 있죠. 그게 그 사  람이 쓰는 거예요. 그들(변호사)중 7이상을 쓰는 사람들이 많이 있어요.
