The Glass Menagerie(유리 동물원) Scene 1-3

오늘도 역시 연극무대에 대한 설명입니다. 무대에 설명이 생각보다 길게 주어집니다. 작가는 아무래도 무대에 대해서 신경을 많이 쓰는 듯합니다. 제가 해본 연극이라고는 교회에서 한번 엑스트라로 나가 본 적은 있습니다. 이렇게 까지 무대를 자세히 설명하리라고는 생각하지 않았습니다. 이 연극을 오픈 곳이 있으면 한번 가서 볼 생각입니다. 번역을 하면서도 이 연극을 직접 보지 않았다는 것이 마음에 걸립니다.

The audience hears and sees the opening scene in the dining-room through both the transparent fourth wall of the building and the transparent gauze portières of the dining-room arch.
관객은 건물의 투명한 네 번째 벽과 식당 아치의 투명한 거즈 포티에르를 통해 식당의 오프닝 장면을 듣고 볼 수 있습니다.
It is during this revealing scene that the fourth wall slowly ascends out of sight. This transparent exterior wall is not brought down again until the very end of the play, during Tom' s final speech.
이 장면에서 네 번째 벽이 서서히 시야 밖으로 올라오는 것이 드러납니다. 이 투명한 외벽은 극이 끝날 때까지 톰의 마지막 연설이 끝날 때까지 다시 내려오지 않습니다.
The narrator is an undisguised convention of the play. He takes whatever licence with dramatic convention is convenient to his purpose.
내레이터는 극의 관습을 숨기지 않습니다. 그는 자신의 목적에 편리한 극적 관습은 무엇이든 받아들입니다.
TOM enters dressed as a merchant sailor from alley, stage left, and strolls across the front of the stage to the fire-escape.
톰이 무대 왼쪽 골목에서 상인 선원 복장을 하고 들어와 무대 앞쪽을 가로질러 비상구까지 걸어갑니다.
 There he stops and lights a cigarette. He addresses the audience.
