With awe and amazement people saw the Pearl of Love sweeping up  from its first beginnings to a superhuman breadth and height and  magnificence. 사람들은 경외심과 놀라움으로 사랑의 진주가 처음 시작했을 때부터 인간 세계를 벗어난 (초인적인) 폭과 높이, 웅장함을 자랑하는 모습을 지켜보았습니다.  * beginnings 초기의 모습들 * awe 경외감 * superhuman 초인적인 * magnificence 장엄, 웅장 sweeping up 휙 올라가는 것

They did not know clearly what they had expected, but  never had they expected so sublime a thing as this. 그들은 자신이 무엇을 기대했는지 명확하게 알지 못했지만, 이토록 숭고한 것을 기대한 적은 없었습니다.  * sublime 절묘한, 숭고한

"Wonderful are the miracles”  they whispered, "that love can do," and all the women in the  world, whatever other loves they had, loved the prince for the splendour  of his devotion. "사랑은 기적을 일으킬 수 있다"고 속삭이며 세상의 모든 여인들은 다른 어떤 사랑을 가졌든, 왕의 헌신에 찬란한 사랑을 보냈어요. * whatever other loves they had 그들이 사랑하는 바는 각각 다르겠지만  * splendour 장관, 장관을 이루는 것들 * devotion 헌신, 몰두, 전념

Through the middle of the building ran a great aisle, a vista, that the  prince came to care for more and more. 건물의 중앙으로 커다란 회랑이 있었고 전망이 보였는데, 왕은 그것을 점점 더 좋아하게 되었다.(이 문장의 vista는 원래 ‘길게 내다보이는 경치, 원경’ 이란 뜻인데, 회랑을 통해서 내다보이는 풍경을 가리킨다. run: 뻗어 있 다.) * vista 경치, 전망

From the inner entrance of the  building he looked along the length of an immense pillared gallery and  across the central area from which the rose-hued columns had long  since vanished, over the top of the pavilion under which lay the  sarcophagus, dirough a marvellously designed opening, to the snowy  wildernesses of the great mountain, the lord of all mountains, two  hundred miles away.

그는 건물의 안쪽 입구에서부터 거대한 기둥이 길게 늘어선 회랑을 따 라, 장밋빛 기둥들이 오래전에 사라진 중앙지대를 가로질러, 석관이 아래에 누워 있는 누각 꼭대기 위로, 장엄하게 설계된 통로 사이로, 2백 마일 멀리 떨어진 모든 산들의 우두머리인 그 야생의 거대한 설산 쪽을 바라보았다. (이 문장은 굉장히 길이가 길지만 구문상으로는 간단하다. 주어는 he이고 동사는 looked인데, 주석에도 있듯이 나머지는 모두 부사구로 연결되어 왕 의 눈길이 거쳐 가는 단계를 보여주고 있다. along~, across~, over~ through~, to~) *immense 엄청난, 어마어마한 *pillared 기둥이 있는

The pillars and arches and buttresses and galleries soared and floated on  either side, perfect yet unobtrusive, like great archangels waiting in the  shadows about the presence of God. 기둥과 아치, 부벽, 회랑은 신의 존재 옆의 그늘 속에서 기다리고 있는 위대한 천사장들처럼 완벽하지만 겸손하게 양쪽에 떠 있듯 이 솟아올라 있었다.(wait about: 근처에서 서성거리며 기다리다) * waiting about 서성거리며 기다리다 * unobtrusive 불필요하게 관심을 끌지 않는 * archangels 대천사*austere beauty

When men saw that austere beauty  for the first time they were exalted, and then they shivered and their hearts bowed down. 사람들은 그 꾸밈없는 아름다움을 보고 처음에는 기쁨에 넘쳤고, 다음에는 전율을 느 끼다가 기가 죽었다 * austere beauty 절제된 아름다움 * exalted 높은, 너무나 기쁜 *shiver 떨다, 전율

 Very often would the prince come to stand there  and look at that vista, deeply moved and not yet fully satisfied. 왕은 무척 자주 그곳을 찾아와 선 채로 그 전망을 바라보곤 했는데, 대단한 감동을 느끼기는 하나 완전히 만족한 모습은 아니었 다.

The Pearl of Love had still something for him to do, he felt, before his  task was done. ‘사랑의 진주’에는 임무를 완수하기 전에 아직 자신이 해야 할 일이 남 아 있다고 그는 느꼈다.

Always he would order some little alteration to be made  or some recent alterations to be put back again. 그는 늘 작은 어떤 변경을 지시하거나 최근에 변경 한 어떤 것을 원상복구 하도록 지시하곤 했다.  * alteration 변화,고침

And one day he said  that the sarcophagus would be clearer and simpler without the pavilion；  and after regarding it very steadfastly for a long time, he had the  pavilion dismantled and removed. 어느 날 그는 누각이 없으면 석관이 더 깨끗하고 단순해질 것이라고 말했다. 오랫 동안 건물을 매우 차 분하게 응시한 끝에 그는 누각을 헐고 치워 버리라는 명을 내렸다 * sarcophagus 석관 *pavilion 가설건물,정자

The next day he came and said nothing, and the next day and the next. Then for two days he stayed away altogether. Then he returned,  bringing with him an architect and two master craftsmen and a small  retinue. 그는 다음 날도 나타났으나 아무 말도 하지 않았고, 그 다음 또 그 다 음 날도 그랬다. 그리고 이틀 동안 그는 완전히 보이지 않았다. 그런 다음 그는 돌아왔는데, 건축가와 두 명의 우두머리 장인 및 적은 수의 수행원을 함께 데리고 왔다.

 At looked, standing together silently in a little group, amidst the serene vastness of their achievement. No trace of toil remained in its perfection. 모두 작은 무리를 짓고 조용히 함께 서서 자신들이 성취해 놓은 잔잔하 고 거대한 모습을 바라보았다. 그 완성된 모습에는 억지로 애써 만든 것 같 은 흔적이 없었다. . * trace of toil 노고의 흔적

It was as if the God of natures beauty had taken over their offspring to  himself. 자연의 아름다움을 창조한 신이 인간의 작품을 자신이 떠맡아 만들어 버린 것 같았다. * their offspring 인간의 작품. offspring(후손)은 작품의 은유.
