The Pearl of Love (사랑의 진주) -3

오늘이 연재 3일째 입니다. 단편 소설이라 내용이 좀 길지만 그래도 매일 조금씩 나누어서 읽으면 편해질 것으로 생각합니다. 모든 공부가 그렇듯이 매일 조금씩 읽어나가는 재미.. 그렇게 하다보면 실력이 나아지지 않을까요?

He said (that) he could never more touch woman, he could never more think of them, and so he would find a seemly youth to adopt for his heir and train him to his task, and that he would do his princely duties as became him；그는 자신이 다시는 여자를 가까이 할 수도 없고 생각조차도 할 수 없으니, 자신의 후계자로 삼을 품격 있는 젊은이를 찾아 그에게 왕업을 가르칠 것이며 자신은 자신에게 어울리는 왕의 직무를 행할 것이라고 말했다. *seemly 적절한, 점잖은 * heir 계승자, 상속인 * became 어울리는

 but that for the rest of it, he would give himself with all his  power and all his strength and all his wealth, all that he could command,  to make a monument worthy of his incomparable, dear, lost mistress.하지만 그 일 외에는, 자신의 모든 권력과 힘과 재산, 자신의 능력이 미치는 모든 것을 쏟아 부어서 그 무엇과도 비교할 수 없는 소중한 자신의 잃어버린 왕비에게 어울릴만한 기념비를 세우는데 전념하겠다고 말했다.  * all that he could command 자기 능력이 미치는 모든 것 *monument 기념물 * mistress 연인(사랑하는 사람)

(A building) it should be( )of perfect grace and beauty, more marvellous than any other building had ever been or could ever be, so that to the end of time it should be a wonder, and men would treasure it and speak of it and desire to see it and come from all the lands of the earth to visit  and recall the name and the memory of his queen. 그 기념비는 완벽한 우아함과 아름다움을 지녀 이전의 그 어떤 건물보다도, 또 앞으로 지어질 어떤 건물보다도 경이로운 건물이 되어, 역사의 마지막 순간까지 불가사의한 것으로 남아 사람들이 소중하게 여기며 그것에 대해 말하고 보기를 원해서 지구상의 모든 나라에서 사람들이 자신의 왕비의 이름과 추억을 회상하게 될 것이라고 말했다.  *marvellous 기가막히게 좋은  * (A building) 도치됨 원래는 (    )로 so that 그래서  *a wonder  경이로운 것, 불가사의를 wonder 로 씀

And this building he  said was to be called the Pearl of Love. And this his councillors and people permitted him to do, and so he did.그리고 그 건물은 ‘사랑의 진주’ 라 불릴 것이라고 말했다. (자문관)신하들과 백성들이 그 일을 하도록 왕에게 허락했으며, 왕은 그렇게 했다. * councillors 의원, 자문관

Year followed year and all the years he devoted himself to building and adorning the Pearl of Love. 해가 거듭될수록 그는 사랑의 진주를 짓고 장식하는 데 전념했습니다.

 A great foundation was hewn out of the living rock in a place whence one seemed to be looking at the snowy wilderness of the great mountain across the valley of the world.  세상의 골짜기 너머 큰 산의 눈 덮인 광야를 바라보는 것 같은 곳에서 거대한 기초가 살아있는 바위를 깎아냈습니다.  * the living rock 자연 암반 * across the valley of the world 세상이라는 계곡 건너편에 * foundation기초 * hew 자르다 * hewn: hew의 과거분사 hew:칼로   베다  * whence ~로부터 (from where)  * wilderness 황야(사람이 살지 않는 곳, 인간세상을 벗어난 곳 , 깊은 숲속 포함)

Villages  and hills there were, a winding river, and very far away three great cities. 마을과 언덕, 구불구불한 강, 그리고 아주 멀리 세 개의 큰 도시가 있었습니다.
