The White Silence - 9

 

토요일 아침입니다. 어젠 퇴근후 바로 잠을 자서 12시간을 넘게 잠만 잤습니다. 추운 계절이라 그런가 잠이 많아 졌네요. 모든 분들은 어찌 지내시나요? 추운 겨울이 지나면 봄이 오지요.. 

Already penitent for his angry action, but too stubborn to make  amends,

이미 화를 낸 행동에 대해 뉘우치고 있지만, 고집이 너무 세서 잘못을 바로잡지 못합니다,

* penitent 참회하는, 뉘우치는  * but too stubborn to make amends 하지만 [잘못한 것에 대해] 보상하기에는 고집이 너무 세다 * stubborn 완고한, 고집 센  * amend (행실 등을) 고치다, 개선하다

Mason toiled on at the head of the cavalcade, little dreaming  that danger hovered in the air.

메이슨은 행렬의 선두에 서서 위험이 도사리고 있다는 사실을 꿈에도 생각하지 못한 채 계속 전진했습니다.

The timber clustered thick in the sheltered bottom,

비바람이 들이치지 않는 저지대 목재가 밀집되어 있었습니다,

 and through this they threaded their way.

그리고 이를 통해 그들은 사이를 누비고 나아갑니다.

Fifty feet or more from the trail towered a lofty pine. For generations it had stood  there,

—  perhaps the same had been decreed of Mason.

아마도 메이슨에 대해서도 같은 운명이 예정되어 있었을지도 모른다.  * decree (운명 등이) 정하다, 판결하다, (하늘이) 명하다

He stooped to fasten the loosened thong of his moccasin.

그는 느슨해진 모카신 끈을 고정하기 위해 허리를 굽혔습니다.

The sleds  came to a halt, and the dogs lay down in the snow without a whimper.

썰매는 멈춰 섰고 개들은 훌쩍이는 소리(흐느낌) 없이 눈밭에 누워 버렸습니다.

The stillness was weird； not a breath rustled the frost-encrusted forest；

 the cold and silence of outer space had chilled the heart and smote the trembling lips of nature.

우주 공간의 차가움과 고요함이 가슴을 차갑게 하고 자연의 떨리는 입술을 강타했습니다.

A sigh pulsed through the air

한숨이 허공에 퍼졌습니다.

—they did not seem  to actually hear it,

실제로는 듣지 못하는 것 같았습니다,

 but rather felt it, like the premonition of movement in  a motionless void.

오히려 그것을 느꼈다, 마치 움직임 없는 공허 속에서의 예감처럼..

Then the great tree, burdened with its weight of years  and snow,

그리고 세월과 눈의 무게에 짓눌린 거대한 나무,

 played its last part in the tragedy of life.

인생의 비극에서 마지막 역할을 했습니다.

 He heard the warning  crash and attempted to spring up but,

그는 경고음이 울리는 것을 듣고 일어서려 시도했지만,

 almost erect, caught the blow squarely on the shoulder. [1/2]

거의 몸을 일으킨 상태에서 어깨에 정면으로 타격을 받았습니다.
