The White Silence - 6

새학기 등록을 하고 나니 교과서가 배달되어 왔습니다. 학년이 올라갈 수록 책의 내용은 어려워지네요. 아직도 기본에서 헤메이고 있는데 말이지요? 다음학기가 걱정이 되네요. 영어공부는 할 수록 어렵다고 느껴지네요. 그럼에도 벌써 4학기를 끝냈으니 박수를 받아야 하나요? 결코 쉽지 않다고 생각이 됩니다. 하지만 이양 시작한거 졸업은 해야지요. 오늘 날이 무척이나 춥습니다.

He who tries this for the first time,

처음 시도하는 사람은,

 if haply he avoids bringing his shoes  in dangerous propinquity and measures not his length on the treacherous footing, 다행히 신발을 위험한 가까운 곳에 두지 않고 불안정한 지면에서 넘어지지 않았다 하더라도, .

백 야드(약 91.44미터)를 지나면 지쳐서 포기할 것입니다.

  he who can keep out of the way of the dogs for a whole day may well  crawl into his sleeping bag with a clear conscience and a pride which  passeth all understanding；

하루 종일 개가 가는 길을 가로 막지 않을 수 있는 사람은 거리낌 없이 모든 이해할 수 없는 자부심을 가지고 침낭에 기어 들어갈 수 있습니다.

 and he who travels twenty sleeps on the Long Trail is a man whom the gods may envy.

긴 길에서 스무 번 잠을 자는 사람은 신이 부러워할 만한 사람입니다

The afternoon wore on, and with the awe, born of the White Silence,  the voiceless travelers bent to their work.

오후가 되자 백색의 침묵이 주는 경외감을 느끼며 소리 없는 여행자들은 각자의 업무에 집중했습니다.

* wear on (시간이) 점점 지나다. 경과하다  * bent to ~에 열중하다, 힘을 쏟다

Nature has many tricks  wherewith she convinces man of his finity

자연은 인간의 유한함을 확신시키는 많은 마술(?)을 가지고 있습니다.

—the ceaseless flow of the  tides, the fury of the storm, the shock of the earthquake, the long roll of  heavens artillery

끊임없이 밀려오는 파도, 폭풍의 맹렬함, 지진의 충격, 하늘에서 쏟아지는 포탄(천둥) 등

-but the most tremendous, the most stupefying of all, -.

그러나 이 모든 것 중에서 가장 거대하고, 가장 경이로운 것은,

is the passive phase of the White Silence.

 백색 침묵의 수동적 상태(형세)입니다.

* passive 반응 없는, 수동적인  * phase 상태, 형세 * tremendous 거대한, 무서운 * stupefying 지각을 잃게 하는, 망연하실케 하는

All movement ceases, the sky  clears, the heavens are as brass；

모든 움직임이 멈추고 하늘이 맑아지고 하늘이 놋쇠처럼 맑아집니다.

 the slightest whisper seems sacrilege,

사소한 속삭임도 신성 모독처럼 느껴집니다,

  and man becomes timid, affrighted at the sound of his own voice.

그리고 사람은 자신의 목소리만 들어도 겁을 먹고 소심 해집니다.
