“Afternoon of an American Boy”-8

Incredible as it seems to me now, I formed the idea of  asking Parnell’s sister Eileen to accompany me to a tea dance at the Plaza.

지금은 나에게 믿을 수 없는 것처럼 보일지라도, 나는 파넬의 여동생 아일린을 나와 같이 플라자호텔의 무도장에 데려가 볼까 하는 생각을 만들어냈다. 

★Incredible as it seems to me: =Even though it seems incredible to me / incredible 믿을 수 없는 of asking"은 전치사구로 "요청하는 것에 대한“accompany 동반하다 

The plan shaped up in my mind as an expedition of unparalleled worldliness, calculated to stun  even the most blasé girl. The fact that I didn’t know how to  dance must have been a powerful deterrent, but not  powerful enough to stop me.

그 계획은 전대미문의 세속성을 향한 탐험으로 내 마음속에 구체화되었는데, 지극히  환락에 물린 소녀조차도 깜짝 놀라도록 계획되었다. 내가 춤을 출 줄 모른다는 사실  이 강력한 억제제였음에 틀림없지만, 그러나 나를 멈출 만큼 충분히 강력하진 않았다.

 shape up: 구체화되다.★an expedition of unparalleled worldliness: 전대미문의 세속성을 향한 탐험

★stun: 큰 감동을 주다, 기절 시키다  ★blasé[bla:zéi]: <프랑스어> 환락에 물린, (기쁜 일에도) 쉽게 감동하지 않는   deterrent  [ dɪ|tɜːrənt ] 제지하는 것

As I look back on the affair, it’s hard to credit my own  memory, and I sometimes wonder if, in fact, the whole business isn’t some dream that has gradually gained the  status of  actuality.

그 일을 돌이켜 보건대, 내 자신의 기억을 믿기가 어렵다, 그리고 나는 가끔씩 궁금하다. 사실상, 그 모든 일이 점차적으로 현실의 지위를 획득해나간 어떤 꿈이  아니었을까 궁금하다.

A boy with any sense, wishing to become  better acquainted with a girl who was “of special interest,”  would have cut out for himself a more modest assignment  to start with — a soda date or a movie date —something  within reasonable limits. Not me.

 (상식이 있는 소년이라면) 특별한 관심을 기울여야 하는 소녀와 좀 더  친해지기를  원하는, 상식이  있는 소년이라면, 스스로  시작하기에  좀  더 신중한 과제를 준비했을 거다. - (신중한 과제는) 탄산수 데이트 또는 영화관 람 데이트- 합리적인 한계 내에 있는 어떤 것. 나는 그러지 못했다.

   acquaint  [əˈkweɪnt] 익히다. 숙지하다  A boy with any sense: "상식이 있는 소년“ 'of special interest'는 "특별한 관심을 받는“★cut out: 예정하다, 준비하다, 알맞게 하다  a more modest assignment: "더 겸손한 과제“   to start with: "시작하기 위해“   something within reasonable limits: "합리적인 범위 내의 무언가"

I apparently became obsessed with the notion of taking Eileen to the Plaza and not to any darned old drugstore.

나는 틀림없이 아일린을 플라자호텔에 데려 가야겠다는 생각에 사로잡혀 있었다. 낡은 편의점에 데려가는 것이 아니라.

  apparently 분명히, 듣자 하니 ★be obsessed with: ~에 사로잡혀 있다  with the notion: "그 생각에“  ★darned: =damned. 넌더리나는 구어체이며 완곡한 표현이다.

I had learned the location of the Plaza, just knowing how to get to it gave me a feeling of confidence.

 나는 플라자호텔의 위치도 알아 두었는데,  그 곳에 어떻게 가는지를 안다는 것이 나에게 자신감의 느낌을 주었다. 

I had learned about  cinnamon toast, so I felt able to cope with the waiter when  he came along. And I banked heavily on the general  splendor of the surroundings and the extreme sophistication  of the function to carry the day, I guess.

 나는 시나몬 토스트에 대해서 알아 두었고, 그래서 웨이터가 왔을 때 그에게 잘 대처할  수 있을 것 같았다. 짐작컨대, 나는 주변 환경의 전반적인 찬란함과 그날을 성공하기 위한 그 의식의 고도의 정교화에 크게 의지했던 것 같다.
