"Afternoon of an American Boy" - 9

I was three days getting up nerve to make the phone call.  Meantime, I worked out everything in the greatest detail. I heeled myself with a safe amount of money. I looked up  trains.

나는 전화를 하려고 용기를 내는데 사흘이나 걸렸다. 그러는 동안, 나는 완벽한 세부사항에 맞춰 모든 일을 세웠다. 나는 충분한 돈도 스스로 마련했다. 나는  기차 시간을 알아보았다.

I overhauled my clothes and assembled an outfit (I  believed) would meet the test.

 나는 내 옷을 점검했고 그 시험에 충족할만한 장비도  구비하였다고 믿었다.

Then, one night at six o’clock, when Mother and Father  went downstairs to dinner, I lingered upstairs and entered the big closet off my bedroom where the wall phone was.

그 다음날 밤 6시에, 부모님이 저녁 식사하러 아래층으로 내려가셨을 때, 나는 2층에 남아 머뭇거리다 내 침실에서 좀 떨어진 벽걸이 전화가 있는 큰방으로 들어  갔다. 

 There I stood for several minutes, trembling, my hand on  the receiver, which hung upside down on the hook. (In our  family, the receiver always hung upside down, with the big  end up.)

거기에 나는 몇 분 동안 서 있었다. 떨면서, 손을 수화기에 댄 체, 그 수화기는 고리에 거꾸로 매달려 있었다. (우리 집에서는 수화기가 늘 거꾸로 매달려  있었다. 큰 쪽이 위로)

I had rehearsed my first line and my second line. I planned  to say, “Hello, can I please speak to Eileen?” Then when she came to the phone, I planned to say, “Hello, Eileen, this is  Elwyn White.”

나는 첫 줄과 둘째 줄을 미리 연습했다. “안녕하세요, 아일린과 통화해도 될까요?”라고 말할 계획이었다. 그러고 나서 그녀가 전화기에 나오면, “안녕하세요,  아일린, 저는 엘윈 화이트예요.”라고 말할 참이었다.

From there on, I figured I could ad-lib it. At last, I picked up the receiver and gave the number. As I  had suspected, Eileen’s mother answered.

 거기서 부터는, 즉흥적으로  말할 수 있을 거라고 생각했다. 마침내, 나는 수화기를 들어서 전화번호를 알려주었다. 내가 예상했던 대로, 아일린의 어머니가 전화를 받았다.
