마틴 루터 킹 목사님의 연설문을 읽어보시면 표현 방법이 아주 뛰어납니다. 약속어음이라는 용어를 써서 연설을 합니다. 이 단어의 선택은 정말로 탁월한 것으로 보입니다. 어떻게 청중의 귀에 꼽히게 할지 고민을 많이 한 것으로 보여집니다. 읽으면 읽을 수록 정말로 명 연설로 느끼게 만듭니다. 한번 읽어보시죠

It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this  promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned.  Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given  the Negro people a bad check; a check which has come back  marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the  bank of justice is bankrupt.

We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the  great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come  to cash this check ─ a check that will give us upon demand  the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have  also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the  fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the  luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of  gradualism.

우리는 이 나라의 거대한 기회의 금고에 잔고가 부족하다는 사실을 믿고 싶지 않습니다. 그래서 우리는 수표를 현금으로 바꾸러 왔습니다. 요구하자마자 자유라는 풍요와 정의라는 안전을 우리에게 주게 될 수표를. 우리는 또한 미국인들에게  현재의 격렬한 긴박성을 일깨워주려고 이 성스러운 곳에 왔습니다. 지금은 감정자제라는 사치를 부리거나 점진주의라는 안정제를 먹을 때가 아닙니다.

Now is the time to make real the promises of Democracy.  Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of  segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the  time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God's  children. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of  brotherhood.
