I have a Dream (나에게는 꿈이 있습니다) - 1

미국에서 인종갈등이 심했던 것은 누구나 아는 일입니다. 이러한 인종 갈등속에서 현명하게 대처한 지도자들이 있었습니다. 차별이 심하고 어려웠던 시절에 명 연설하나로 갈등 문제를 해결나가신 분이 계십니다. 바로 마틴 루터 킹 목사님이십니다. 이 문장들을 읽을때 마다 가슴이 뜨거워짐을 느끼게 됩니다. 같이 읽으면서 그 당시의 감동 속으로 들어가 봅시다.

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in  history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the  history of our nation.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic  shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation  Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great  beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had  been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a  joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.

But one hundred years later, the Negro is still not free.

One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly  crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on  a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of  material prosperity.

One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the  corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his  own land. So we have come here today to dramatize a  shameful condition.

백년이 지난 지금, 흑인들은 여전히 미국사회의 변두리에서 괴로움을 당하며, 바로 자신의 조국에서 유배자가 되어있는 자신을 보게 됩니다. 그래서 우리는 치욕적인 상황을 생생하게 보여주기 위해서 오늘 여기에 왔습니다.

In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check.

When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent  words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence,  they were signing a promissory note to which every American  was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black  men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the inalienable  rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

어떤 의미에서 우리는 수표를 현금으로 바꾸려고 우리나라의 수도에 왔습니다.  우리 공화국을 건설한 사람들이 헌법과 독립선언서의 장엄한 어구들을 썼을 때,  그들은 모든 미국인이 상속받게 되어있던 약속어음에 서명을 한 것이었습니다.  이 약속어음은 백인들 뿐 아니라 흑인들까지도 생명권과 자유권과 행복추구권이라는 양도할 수 없는 권리들을 보장받을 수 있다는 약속이었습니다.
