5. American Mind and Exceptionalism

마찬가지로 한국방송통신대의 교재 내용중의 일부입니다. 과목은 미국사회와 문화라는 과목이며 이 장을 통해서 미국사회를 엿볼수 있는 중요한 기회가 되고 있습니다. 미국을 세우기 위해서 도착한 이들은 배위에서의 설교는 영원히 남을 것 같습니다. 마태복음 5장14절의 내용으로 했다는 것을 이제야 알았습니다.

 

“City upon a Hill” by John Winthrop

“A Model of Christian Charity”: 아벨로 호(1630년 영국 출발) 선상의 설교 신대륙의 매사추세츠 만 (Massachusetts Bay) 식민지에 도착

Winthrop and the migrants were to strive for a new vision and new ideals {as they built this community in Boston, a hilly terrain, where the world would be closely watching them}. In other words, the colonists in the new land [located in the Massachusetts Bay] were to be a shining example for the world. →윈스롭과 이주민들은 세상이 그들을 면밀히 지켜볼 언덕이 많은 지역인 보스턴에 이 공동체를 세우면서 새로운 비전과 이상을 위해 노력하게 될 것이다. 달리 말해, 매사추세츠 만에 위치한 새로운 땅에서 식민지인들은 세상을 위한 빛나는 사례가 될 것이었다.

The phrase “city upon a hill” was a reference [taken from Jesus’ famous Sermon on the Mount {as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew 5:14}]. Christian believers were called by Jesus to be “the light of the world” and “a city upon a hill” that could not be hidden. → “언덕 위의 도시”라는 구절은 마태복음 5장14절에 기록된 예수의 유명한 산상설교에서 인용한 것이다. 기독교 신자들은 숨길 수 없는 “세상의 빛”이자 “언덕 위의 도시”가 될 것을 예수로부터 요청 받았다.

As Winthrop exhorted his fellow colonists: “For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us, so that {if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work [we have undertaken], and so cause Him to withdraw His present help from us}, we shall be made a story and a by-word through the world.” →위스롭은 동료 식민지인들에게 다음과 같이 촉구하였다. “모든 사람의 눈이 우리를 보고 있다. 따라서 우리가 떠맡은 이 일에 있어서, 우리가 신을 그릇되게 섬겨 신으로 하여금 현재 주는 도움을 철회하도록 하면 우리는 전 세계에 한낱 이야깃거리이자 조롱거리가 되고 말 것이다.”

Our age is retrospective. It builds the sepulchres of the fathers. It writes biographies, histories, and criticism. The foregoing generations beheld God and nature face to face; we, through their eyes. → 우리의 시대는 회고에 잠겨 있다. 왜냐하면 우리의 시대는 선조들의 묘나 짓고, 전기, 역사, 비평이나 쓰고 있기 때문이다. 이전 세대들이 신과 자연을 직접적 대면을 통해서 본다면, 우리는 그들의 눈을 통하여 보고 있는 꼴이다.

Why should not we also enjoy an original relation to the universe? Why should not we have a poetry and philosophy of insight and not [a poetry and philosophy] of tradition, and a religion by revelation to us, and not by the history of theirs [their revelations]? → 왜 우리라고 우주와의 근원적인 관계를 즐겨서는 안 된다는 말인가? 왜 우리는 물려받은 시 와 철학이 아닌 통찰력의 시와 철학을 갖지 못하며, 선조들이 받은 계시의 기록이 아니라, 우 리들에게 온 계시의 종교를 가지면 안 되는 것인가?

William James (1842~1910)

Both early and contemporary pragmatists reject the idea of a certain Truth {that can be discovered through logical analysis or revelation}, and are more interested in knowledge gained through experiences of all sorts. → 초기 실용주의자들과 현대 실용주의자들은 어떤 진리가 논리적 분석이나 계시를 통해 발견 될 수 있다는 관념을 거부하고, 모든 종류의 경험을 통해 얻는 지식에 더 관심을 둔다.

If you follow the pragmatic method, you cannot look on any such words [God and Reason] as closing your quest. You must bring out of each word its practical cash-value, set it at work within the stream of your experience. It appears less as a solution, then, than as a program for more work, and more particularly as an indication of the ways {in which existing realities may be changed}.” → 만약 당신이 실용적인 방법을 따른다면, 〔신이나 이성〕과 같은 단어들을 당신의 탐구를 마감하는 것으로 여길 수 없다. 각 단어로부터 그것의 실제적인 현금 가치를 끌어내야만 하고, 당신 경험 안에서 그것을 작동하게 해야 한다. 따라서 그것은 해결책으로서가 아니라 보다 많은 일을 위한 프로그램으로서 그리고 보다 더 특별하게 현존하는 현실들이 변화 될 수 있는 방식을 알려주는 것으로 나타난다.

Individualism is the moral stance, political philosophy, ideology, or social outlook {that stresses “the moral worth of the individual.”} → 개인주의는 “개인의 도덕적 가치”을 강조하는 도덕적 자세, 정치적 철학, 이데올로기 혹은 사회적 관점이다.

※ American exceptionalism

정치적 종교적 체제, 이민자들로 구성된 국민, 여타의 특성들로 인해 전세계 어느 국가와 비교 하더라고 다르다는 미국인의 인식을 가리킨다.

※ visible sainthood

성인다움(구원받았음)을 눈으로 확인한다는 의미를 함축한 ‘가시적 성인성’은 뉴잉글랜드로 하여 금 구세계 유럽은 물론 영국의 칼빈주의와도 선을 긋게 하는 중요한 이론적 지반이었다.

※ Transcendentalism

기성종교에 반대하는가 하면, 물리적, 경험적 세계를 넘어 개인의 직관을 통해 실현되는 이상적 인 정신적인 상태를 강조 하였다. 에머슨(R. W. Emerson), 소로(Henry David Thoreau)등이 대표 적 인물이다.
