"Afternoon of an American Boy" -11

이제 1학기 수강신청도 했습니다. 새로 공부좀 해야지요. 가징 쉬운 공부는 학교를 다니는 길이네요. 혼자서는 공부하기 힘들다고 하는 것을 다시한번 느낍니다.

I do not know now, and of course did not know then, just  how great was the mental and physical torture Eileen went through that day, but the incident stacks up as a sort of  unintentional un-American activity, for which I was solely  responsible. It all went off as scheduled:

나는 지금도 모르겠고, 물론 그때도 몰랐다, 그날 아일린이 겪었을 정신적 육체적 고통이 얼마나 심했을 지를, 그러나 그 일은 결과적으로 일종의 의도하지 않은 비미국적 행동이 되고 만다, 그 일은 전적으로 내 책임이었다. 그 모든 일은 계획한대로 진행되었다.

the stately walk to the depot; the solemn train ride, during  which we sat staring shyly into the seat in front of us; the difficult walk from Grand Central across Forty-second to  Fifth, with pedestrians clipping us and cutting in between  us; the bus ride to Fifty-ninth Street; then the Plaza itself,  and the cinnamon toast, and the music, and the excitement.

정거장까지 가는 장중한 걸음걸이; 엄숙한 기차여행, 우리가 수줍게 우리 앞에 있는 좌석을 응시하면서 앉아있는 동안; 중앙역으로부터 42번가를 지나 5번가까지 가는 그 어려운 걸음걸이, 보행자들이 우리를 갈라놓고 우리 사이에 끼어 들어왔다; 59번가까지는 버스를 타고 갔다; 그러면 플라자호텔이 있고,  그리고 시나몬 토스트, 음악, 흥분된 일이 있었다.
