Louise(루이즈)-4

Louise (루이즈) 4 회차입니다. 단편 소설이라고 하지만 내용이 깁니다. 읽다보면 지겹지요? 하지만 인내심도 필요하답니다. 그냥 한국말 처럼 읽는 날이 언젠가 오겠지요. 저도 일일이 사전을 찾아가면서 읽으려니 보통일이 아닙니다. ㅎㅎ
아무튼 함께 영어공부 해봅시다.

 
Louise outlived her husband. 루이스는 그녀의 남편보다 훨씬 더 오래 살았다.
He caught his death of cold one  day 그는 어느 날 지독한 감기에 걸렸었다. * caught his death of cold 지독한 감기에 걸리다
 when they were sailing and 그 때, 그들은 배를 타고 있었고,

Louise needed all the rugs there were to keep her warm. 루이스가 (추워서) 그녀를 따뜻하게 하기 위해서 거기에 있는 모든 담요를 몽땅 필요로 했다(그래서 톰은 감기에 걸려 죽었다.).
He left her a comfortable fortune and a  daughter..  그는 넉넉한 재산과 딸 하나를 그녀에게 남기고 떠났다. * a comfortable fortune 넉넉한 재산*
Louise was inconsolable. 루이스는 큰 슬픔에 잠겨 있었다(위로할 길이 없었다)..  * inconsolable 위로 할 수 없는
It was wonderful that she  managed to survive the shock. 그녀가 그 충격을 그럭저럭 견뎌 낸 것은 놀라운 일이었다.
Her friends expected her speedily  to follow poor Tom Maitland to the grave. 그녀의 친구들은 그녀가 재빠르게 가련한 톰 마이트랜드를 뒤따라 무덤으로 가리라 예측을 했었다.
Indeed they already felt  dreadfully sorry for Iris, her daughter, 사실 그들은 그녀의 딸 아이리스를 무척이나 안쓰러워 했다.
who would be left an  orphan. 그 아이는 곧 고아가 될 터이니까.
They redoubled their attentions towards Louise. 그들은 루이스에 대한 그들의 관심을 배가 시켰다.  * redoubled 배가 시켰다. 두배로 늘렸다

They would not let her stir a finger； 그들은 그녀가 손가락 하나 까딱하지 않도록 하곤 했고,
 they insisted on doing  everything 모두를 다 해주겠노라고 주장했다.
 in the world to save her trouble. 세상에 있는 그녀의 고통을 덜어주기 위해서,

They had to, because 그들은 그렇게 해야만 했다. 왜냐하면
  if she was called upon to do anything tiresome or inconvenient her heart went back on her and 만약 그녀가 성가시고 불편한 어떤 일을 하도록 하게 한다면, 그녀의 심장이 그녀를 다시 저버리게 되고 그러면
 there she was at death’s door. 그녀는 곧 죽음의 문턱으로 다가갈 것이기 때문이다.  .  * went back on =failed

She  was entirely lost without a man to take care of her, 그녀는 자기를 돌봐 줄 남자가 없었다면 완전히 사라졌을 거야 라고 말했다. * lost = destroyed, ruined
she said, and  she did not know how, 그리고 몰랐을 거라고 말했다. /  어떻게
 with her delicate health, 그녀의 연약한 건강 때문에
she was going to  bring up her dear Iris. 자신의 사랑스런 딸 아이리스를 (어떻게) 양육할 수 있을지를

Her friends asked why she did not marry  again. 그녀의 친구들은 그녀가 왜 다시 결혼하지 않느냐고 물었다.

Oh, with her heart it was out of the question, 오, (자신의 심장으로는 그것은 불가능하지.)그녀의 마음으로는 도저히 이해할 수 없는 일이었습니다, *out of the question =impossible, *wretched invalid 불쌍한 환자
 though of course she knew that dear Tom would have wished her to, 물론 그녀는 사랑하는 톰이 자기가 결혼하는 것을 바라고 있었을 것이라고 알고는 있었지만,
and perhaps it would  be the best thing for Iris if she did  그리고 아마도 그것이 그녀가 그렇게만 한다면, 아이리스를 위해서도 가장 좋은 일이 되겠지만 말이야.
；but who would want to be  bothered with a wretched invalid like herself? 그러나 누가 자신과 같은 비참한 병자에게 (결혼해서) 고통을 받기를 원 하겠어?
Oddly enough more  than one young man showed himself quite ready to undertake the  charge and 그런데 이상하게도 여러 명의 남자가 스스로 나타나서 그 책임을 떠맡을 준비가 됐다고 했고,
 a year after Tom’s death she allowed George Hobhouse  to lead her to the altar. 그래서 톰이 죽은 지 일 년 후에 그녀는 죠지 홉하우스에게 결혼을 허락했다.  * lead her to the altar =marry
He was a fine, upstanding fellow and he was  not at all badly off. 그는 멋지고 정직한 사람이었으며, 전혀 가난하지도 않았다.  * upstanding  곧은 성격의, 솔직한
I never saw anyone 나는 / 결코 어떤 사람도 만나 본적이 없었다.
so grateful as he for the  privilege of being allowed 그 사람만큼 그렇게 고마워하는 / 허락 받은 특전에 대해
to take care of this frail little thing. 이토록 연약하고 작은 존재를 돌볼 수 있도록, * thing 사람

I shan’t live to trouble you long’ she said. ‘나는 살면서 당신을 오래도록 고통받게 하지는 않을 거예요.’라고 그녀는 말했다.

He was a soldier and an ambitious one, 그는 군인이었고, 게다가 야심이 있는 군인이었다.
but he resigned his  commission. 그러나 그는 전역을 했다. .* resigned his  commission 전역하였다
Louise’s health forced her to spend the winter at Monte Carlo and the summer at Deauville. 루이스의 건강 때문에 겨울엔 그녀를 몬테 카를로에서 보내게 했고, 여름엔 도빌에서 보내도록 했다
He hesitated a little at throwing up his career, 그는 그의 직업을 그만두는 것을 처음에는 약간 망설였다. * throwing up 포기하다
and Louise at first would not hear of it； 그런 말을 들으려 하지 않았다.
 but at last she yielded as she always yielded, 그리고 루이스도 처음에는 그러나 그녀는 늘 굴복하듯이 마침내 굴복했다.
 and he prepared to make  his wife’s last few years as happy as might be. 그리고 그는 그의 아내의 마지막 얼마 남지 않은 몇 년을 할 수 있는 한 가장 행복하게 해줄 준비가 되어 있었다.
'It can’t be very long now she said. 'I’ll try not to be troublesome. ' ‘그것은 이제 그렇게 오래 갈 수 없어요,’ 그녀는 말했다. ‘나는 성가시게 하지 않을 거예요.’
