2. What is an American?

한국방송통신대 학생으로서 공부하면 책 내용 일부를 올려봅니다. 4강의 내용으로 아주 유익합니다. 읽으만 하면서 미국이라는 나라를 이해할 수 있도록 해주고 있습니다. 영어를 공부하려면 역시 학교가 제일입니다. 제일 훌륭하신 교수님들이 계시고 열정을 가지신 분들이 가르치는 학교입니다. 대한민국 최고의 대학이라고 생각합니다. 

 In the United States, Crèvecoeur was perhaps the first person to come up with the metaphor of the “melting pot,” where immigrants came together and blended to form a united whole. → 크레브쾨르는 아마도 미국에 “멜팅 팥” 이라는 은유를 최초로 생각해 낸 사람일 것이다. 멜 팅 팥에서 이민자들이 하나로 합쳐지고 섞여서 통합된 전체를 형성했다.

“Here individuals of all nations are melted into a new race of men, whose labours and posterity will one day cause great changes in the world. Americans are the western pilgrims, who are carrying [along with them] that great mass of arts, sciences, vigour, and industry which began long since in the east. → 그는 여기서 모든 나라의 개인들이 녹아 들어 새로운 인종이 되고, 이들의 노고와 후손이 언젠가는 세상에 위대한 변화를 일으킬 것이다. 미국인들은 서방의 순례자들로, 동쪽에서 오래 전에 시작된 예술, 과학, 활력, 근면성을 상당 부분 가지고 온다.

He welcomes the poor immigrant (“the distressed European”), and promises him a series of rewards: “If you will work, I will feed you; if you are honest, sober, and industrious, I will reward you with ease and independence. I will give you fields and land so that you may be comfortable and prosper. I will give you freedom and take care of you and your family.” Thus, he concludes: “Go and work and till; you shall prosper, provided you be just, grateful and industrious.” →크레브쾨르는 (곤궁한 유럽인들), 즉 가련한 이민자들을 다정하게 맞이하며 그에게 일련의 보 상을 약속한다. “그대가 일하고자 한다면, 그대를 먹일 것이요, 그대가 정직하고 맑은 정신이며 근면하다면, 나는 안락함과 자립으로 그대를 보상해 주리라. 그대가 편안하고 번영할 수 있도록 그대에게 들판과 대지를 주겠 노라. 그대에게 자유를 주고 그대와 가족들을 돌보아 주리라.” “나 아가 일하고 경작하라. 만약 그대가 정당하고 고마워하며 근면하다면 그대가 번영하게 해주리 라.“라고 글을 마친다.

Temperance first, as it tends to procure that coolness and clearness of head, which is so necessary where constant vigilance was to be kept up, and guard maintained against the unremitting attraction of ancient habits, and the force of perpetual temptations. → 절제는 머리를 차분하고 명료하게 해 주는 경향이 있는데, 이것은 옛 습관의 줄지 않는 유인력과 지속적인 유혹의 힘에 맞서 감시상태를 유지하고 방어할 경우 너무 필요하게 때문에 가장 먼저 온다.

Considering that in conversation it was obtained rather by the use of the ears than of the tongue, and therefore wishing to break a habit {I was getting into of prattling, punning, and joking}, {which only made me acceptable to trifling company}, I gave Silence the second place. →나는 대화를 할 때에 혀보다는 귀를 씀으로써 지식이 얻어진다고 생각하며, 따라서 나를 사 소한 부류로 받아들여지게 할 뿐인 재잘거리고 말장난하고 농담하는 등의 내가 빠져드는 습관 들을 타파하고 싶었기 때문에 나는 침묵을 두 번째 자리에 내주었다.

Benjamin Franklin

I made a little book, in which I allotted a page for each of the virtues. I ruled each page with red ink, so as to have seven columns, one for each day of the week, marking each column with a letter for the day. I crossed these columns with thirteen red lines →나는 작은 책자를 만들고 거기에 덕목들의 각각에 한 면을 할애 했다. 세로 칸을 그어, 요일 의 첫 글자를, 세로 칸에 13개의 선을 그어 각 줄에 덕목의 첫 글자를 썼다. → moral perfection 에 이르기 위해서였다.

※ melting pot

이질적인 사회가 동질적인 사회로 된다는 점을 가리키기 위한 은유로서 특히 미국으로 간 이민자들의 동화현상을 지칭하기 위해 1780년대 이래로 쓰여 왔다. 그러나 1970년대 이래 ‘다문화주의’에 의해 문제제기를 받으면서 salad bowl이라는 은유가 대안적으로 제기되기도 한다.

※ self-made man myth

미국의 경우, 스스로에게 첫 번째 미국인(the first American)의 이미지를 부여하려고 했던 인물 은 Benjamin Franklin이다. 그의 자서전을 통해 from rags to riches 라는 이미지를 만들어냈다.
