The White Silence - 18

내일이면 The white Silence의 이야기도 마무리 됩니다. 짧게 잘라서 이야기를 옮기다 보니.. 길어졌습니다. 이제 학기가 시작되어서 나름대로 학교 공부도 시작해야 합니다.

Taking advantage of neighboring pines, he worked rapidly,

이웃 소나무를 이용하여 그는 빠르게 작업했습니다,

 and Ruth watched him make a cache similar to those sometimes used by hunters to preserve their meat from the wolverines and dogs.

그리고 루스는 그가 사냥꾼들이 늑대나 개로부터 고기를 보존하기 위해 가끔 사용하는 것과 유사한 캐시(저장소)를 만드는 것을 지켜보았습니다.

One after the other, he bent the tops of two small pines toward each other and nearly to the ground, making them fast with thongs of moosehide.

그는 작은 소나무 두 그루의 꼭대기를 차례로 서로를 향해 거의 땅에 닿을 정도로 구부려서 무스 가죽 끈으로 빠르게 만들었습니다.

Then he beat the  dogs into submission and harnessed them to two of the sleds,

These he  wrapped and lashed tightly about him, fastening either end of the robes to the bent pines.

 A single stroke of his hunting knife would release them and send the body high in the air.

그의 사냥 칼로 한 번만 칼을 그으면 그것들이 풀리며 몸이 공중으로 높이 날아오를 것입니다.

Ruth had received her husband’s last wishes and made no struggle.

루스는 남편의 마지막 유언을 받으면서도 아무런 저항도 하지 않았습니다.

Poor girl, she had learned the lesson of obedience well.

불쌍한 여인, 그녀는 복종의 교훈을 잘 배웠습니다.

The Kid permitted  her one outburst of grief, as she kissed her husband

키드는 남편에게 키스하면서 한 번의 슬픔의 폭발을 허용했습니다.

—then led her to the foremost sled and helped her into her snowshoes.

그리고는 그녀를 가장 앞쪽 썰매로 데려가 스노우 슈즈를 신을 수 있도록 도와주었습니다.

Blindly, instinctively, she took the gee pole and whip,  and ‘mushed’ the dogs out on the trail.

맹목적으로, 본능적으로, 그녀는 지폴(개 썰매에 달린 끌 채)과 채찍을 잡고 개들을 몰아 길로 나섰습니다.

Then he returned to Mason, who  had fallen into a coma, and long after she was out of sight, crouched by the fire, waiting, hoping, praying for his comrade to die.

그리고 그는 혼수상태에 빠진 메디슨에게 돌아와 그녀가 시야에서 사라진 지 한참 후 에야 불 옆에 쭈그리고 앉아 동지가 죽기를 기다리며, 바라며, 기도했습니다.
