The Glass Menagerie (유리 동물원) Scene 1-7
이번 장면에서는 아들 키우는 엄마들이 겪는 공통사항이 아닐까 싶습니다. 말을 잘 들을 것 같은 녀석이 머리좀 컷다고 삐딱선을 타니 말이지요. 아무튼 한국이나 미국이나 사람 사는 모습은 비슷한 거 아닐까요?
AMANDA [lightly]: Temperament like a Metropolitan star ! [He rises and crosses downstage.] You're not excused from the table.
메트로폴리탄 스타 같은 성질 머리 하고는 (기질)! [그는 일어나서 무대를 가로질러 내려갑니다. 너는 테이블에서 떠나도록 허락되지 않았어.
* Temperament 신경질적임 *Metropolita =Metropolitan Opera House. Tom의 행동을 유명하고 거만한 예술가에 비유하고 있다
TOM: I'm getting a cigarette. 나는 담배를 피우러 가요.
AMANDA: You smoke too much. 너는 담배를 너무 많이 피워
[LAURA rises.]
LAURA: I'll bring in the blancmangé. 블랑망제를 가져올 게요.
* blancmange 우유를 갈분.우무로 굳힌 과자, 우유를 굳혀서 만든 과자의 일종(후식으로 쓰임)
[He remains standing with his cigarette by the portières during the following.] [그는 다음 시간 동안 현관 옆에 담배를 피우며 서 있습니다.]
AMANDA [rising]: No, sister, no, sister - you be the lady this time and I'll be the darkey 아니, 딸아, 아니, 딸아 - 이번엔 네가 숙녀가 되고 나는 다키(하인)가 될거야.
* lady 마님, 귀분인 * darkey 흑인, 하인(집안일을 하는 하녀)
LAURA: I'm already up. 벌써 일어섰어요.
AMANDA: Resume your seat, little sister, I want you to stay fresh and pretty for gentleman callers! 자리로 돌아와, 여동생, 신사 방문객을 위해 상큼하고 예쁜 모습을 보여줘야지!
LAURA: I'm not expecting any gentleman callers. 신사 방문객을 기대하지 않는다.
AMANDA [crossing out to kitchenette. Airily]: Sometimes they come when they are least expected! Why, I remember one Sunday afternoon in Blue Mountain -[Enters kitchenette.] [간이 주방으로 가로질러가면서, 경쾌하게]: 가끔은 예상치 못한 순간에 오기도 하죠! 왜, 블루마운틴의 어느 일요일 오후가 기억나요 -[간이 주방으로 들어갑니다.]
* Airily 경쾌하게 * kitchenette 간이부엌, 주방
TOM: I know what's coming 무슨 일이 일어날지 알아요
LAURA: Yes. But let her tell it. 네. 하지만 그녀가 말하게 하세요.
TOM: Again? 다시?
LAURA: She loves to tell it. 그녀는 이야기하는 것을 좋아 하잖아.
[AMANDA returns with bowl of dessert.] [아만다가 디저트 한 그릇을 들고 돌아옵니다.]
AMANDA: One Sunday afternoon in Blue Mountain, your mother received seventeen! gentlemen callers! Why, sometimes there weren't chairs enough to accommodate them all. We had to send the nigger over to bring in folding chairs from the parish house.
블루 마운틴의 어느 일요일 오후, 여러분의 어머니는 열 일곱 명의 신사방문객을 맞이했었다! 왜, 때때로 그들을 모두 수용할 만큼 의자가 충분하지 않았어요. 우리는 흑인하인을 보내서 본당에서 접이식 의자를 가져와야 했다.

TOM [remaining at portières]: How did you entertain those gentleman callers? [포르티에에 남아있음]: 그 신사방문객들을 어떻게 접대하셨나요?
A M A N D A: I understood the art of conversation ! 대화의 기술을 알았다!
TOM: I bet you could talk. 엄마 말은 잘했겠지 (말씀하실 수 있을 것 같네요.)
