4. American Manners

이 14강을 수강하면서 느끼는 점은 미국인도 추한 행동을 하던 시절이 있었다라는 점이다. 예전에 한국인도 어글리 코리안이라고 흉을 보던 시절이 있었다. 지금은 중국인이 그렇다라고 놀리지만. 아무튼 초기 발전하는 단계에서는 어쩔 수 없었던 모양이다.

또한 식사 예절도 나름 까다롭다. 어렵게 느껴지던 부분도 읽으면서 쉽게 다가 온다. 아무튼 공부란 것이 이렇게 좋을 수 도 있다.

한국방송통신대에는 훌륭한 교수님들이 계시고 열정을 가진 학생이 많다. 함께 공부하면 좋을 것이라고 생각하면서

Sharp observers like Frances Trollope (1776-1863) published embarrassing descriptions of crude national behavior, including spitting, tobacco chewing, rude eating habits at the table, lack of respect for privacy, wild behavior at theatres and on holidays, and childish sensitivity to harsh words. → Frances Trollope 같은 예리한 관찰자들은 국민의 조야한 행동에 대한 당혹스러운 묘사들을 한 책을 출판했는데, 침 뱉기, 담배 씹기, 식탁에서 무례한 식사습관, 사생활에 대한 존경의 결여, 극장과 휴일에 거친 행위, 그리고 거친 말에 대한 유치한 민감성 등이 있다.

With manners and political values so closely linked, it was natural [for regional differences to have their own special meanings]. The Southerner’s hospitality and chivalry, his elaborate code of honor and sensitivity to insult; the Yankee’s quiet, untalkative nature, curiosity, and refusal to put on airs → 예의범절과 정치적 가치들이 너무나 밀접히 연결되어 있어서, 지역적 차이가 그 자신의 특별 한 의미를 지니는 것은 당연했다. 남부인 들의 호의적인 성격 및 기사도 정신, 명예에 대한 남 부인의 정교한 규범, 그리고 모욕에 대한 민감성, 양키들의 조용하고 과묵한 성격, 호기심, 거만 떠는 것에 대한 거부감등의 특성이 여러 매체들로 희화화 되었다.

In the late nineteenth century the American abroad symbolized [for some] the dangers of sudden wealth. [Boasting, vulgarity, obsessive acquisitiveness, and insensitivity] were soon associated with this early version of Ugly American. → 19세기 후반에 외국에 나간 미국인은 어떤 이들에게 갑작스런 부의 위험을 상징했다. 과시, 천박함, 집착적인 호기심, 그리고 무감각함은 곧 추한 미국인의 이 초기버전과 연관되었다.

In most cases, business gifts are given at the end of a business deal. Gifts are usually unwrapped upon receiving them. When you are eating in the American style, you will hold the fork in your left hand [with the tines pointing downward] and the knife in your right hand {when cutting a piece of food}. 영국의 소설가이자 수필가로 1832년에 Domestic Manners of the Americans라는 여행 서를 펴냈다. 노예제에 대한 혐오를 비롯하여, 미국에서 예절도 학문도 없으며 미국 중산계급은 평등 주의적인 경향에 사로잡혀 천박함을 드러낸다고 피력함으로써 대서양 양쪽 모두에게 센세이션 을 일으킨 바 있다.
